Re: Tirant Clubs Baby Seal -Reply

Alfredo asked the list about a passage involving Tirant lo Blanc and a
tale involving the knight's early career and graphic violence, and as
probably the only other person on the list to have read the book, I'm
gonna go ahead and respond.

One of the things one must remember about this book: It's basically a
guide to How To Be A Knight, cribbed from all kinds of sources. The
first whole section is just a retelling (almost word-for-word in places)
of the story of Guy of Warwick.

Diafebo (aka Diaphebus, a kinsman of Our Hero who serves as his squire in
this section) is telling of the early exploits of Tirant. While Tirant
is already considered "chivalrous" at this point, he is not to the vastly
"higher" scale of chivalry that he attains later in the work. (Compare
the Tirant bashing brains to, say, Tirant teaching the prince how to make
himself worthy of a lady.)

ALSO ... remember that in this part of the book, the author is really
trying to titillate the reader. He does this sometimes, and it can get
incredibly annoying. (Hey, Alfredo, are *you* going to tell everyone
what Hipolito does to the Empress?) ;)
