EVENT FLYER: Mabinogi VII: Gereint and Enid

Poster: SWMyers@aol.com

"Boldly and without hesitation, Gereint entered the mist, and when he
emerged he found..."

For over ten years now, the Barony of the Sacred Stone has breathed life into
a small town; poised on the edge of all we know and the stuff of which we
dream. It is the mythical village called Mabinogi. Inspired by tales from
the White Book of Rhydderch, more commonly known as the Mabinogion; the town
symbolizes the rich and concrete beauty of the mortal world intertwined with
the flickering, shadowy uncertainty of the otherworld. More than just
play-acting Celtic literature, Mabinogi represents the very heart of
adventure... the dream, come to life. Please join us, as the village appears
once again, and calls forth the hero in us all...

Mabinogi VII: Gereint and Enid

"With that Gereint set out... traveling through excellent and lovely flat
plains until they came to a walled town with a fortress and castle at one
end.

THE SITE: Omens and portents suggest that Mabinogi will reveal itself in the
area of Camp Cherokee in King's Mountain State Park sometime between 5:00pm
on Friday, October 25th and 1:00pm on Sunday, October 27th. Travelers may
take their ease in the village's cabins with beds and/or floor space.

"The host of men and arms and horses that you saw in the town have come for
the tournament..."

THE KNIGHT OF THE KESTREL: A game for heavy fighters, this is a single
elimination tournament to decide who will lay claim to the kestrel. The
defending champion, Edern ap Nudd has won two years in a row. A third win
will make him Knight of the Kestrel unless he can be unseated this morning by
you.

"They rode out then, and their road was neither the pleasantest nor the most
traveled, but the wildest and surest for thieves and robbers and wild beasts.

THE GAUNTLET: Gereint defeated ninety-two knights on his journey to meet
Gwiffred Petit, The Little King! How many brigands and monsters can you
defeat while traversing this wooded corridor in a single elimination game for
period fencers?

"...each man has brought the woman he loves best, for he who has not brought
his lady may not joust for the kestrel."

A FAVOUR COMPETITION: Without Enid's inspiration, Gereint would have lost the
two most important battles of his life. The symbol of a lady's inspiration
has always been her favour. Neither heavy nor rapier fighters may compete
today without carrying the favor of a lady who is present. Her Excellency,
Baroness Rachel de Johnstone will choose the favor that best inspires a
lady's champion to greatness during a processional just prior to the
tournaments.

"Below there is a hedge of mist, and enchanted games within..."

THE GAMES: The Canton of Bflfire Dunn has immersed their very special, annual
Scottish Games within the Mabinogi milieu to help fan the fun and excitement
that their games have always inspired. Each event will help propel visitors
from one adventure to another within the village in an attempt to defeat Earl
Limwris. But there's more to this Earl than meets the eye and not everyone
is certain to survive!

The games will include: Cumberland Wrestling, a Caber Toss, the Sheep Toss, a
Kilted Foot Race, and many, many more. There will be an on-going Sheep
Stealing Contest between the village's rival Clanns. And, of course, you'll
be sure to take the Tartan Challenge! Not to worry, your Mabinogi Visitor's
Guide will help through all of the village's many twists and turns.

"I saw in the forest a hart the like of which I have never seen before."

A HUNT FOR CHILDREN: All of the Scottish games will have special areas for
children. Their goal will be to complete a puzzle of either the White Hart
or Arthur's favorite hunting dog, Cavall, by competing in these games with
prizes for every child including one, overall winner.

"Then take my advice and have your meal with me."

THE FOOD: Food and comfort may be taken at the Mabinogi Tavern, renowned for
its hearty fare and fine ales. Visitors to the village may purchase meals
and beverages there throughout the weekend, though Her Excellency has
commanded a banquet to be held on Saturday evening for Her On-Board guests!

"...Everywhere people all but broke their necks thronging to greet them and
make them welcome."

THE VILLAGE: This is a working town with shops, residents, craftsmen, bakers,
butchers, etceteras. Be sure and visit some of Mabinogi's more colorful
citizens and take in it's diverse history and color. The town uses its own
coinage, the Mabon, but the bank will happily exchange foreign currencies.

"They spent a quiet evening with songs and entertainment and conversation and
enough service and when they all thought it time for bed they went."

DANCE AND BARDIC: Residents of Mabinogi are notorious dancers and musicians.
Be prepared to stay up late at the tavern to sing and dance after the feast
on Saturday! The Lord Mayor is even sponsoring a competition for the best
poem based on any subject found in The Mabinogion.

"Do you know how much I owe you?" "Good sir, I do not believe it is much."

THE COST: The cost of the event is $14.00 On-Board; $10.00 Off-Board; $5.00
for day-trippers. Children 6-12 are half price and children 5 and under are
guests of Bflfire Dunn. Please send all reservations to the Autocrat: Bran
Trefonnen (Scot Woodward Myers, P.O. Box 2981, Davidson, NC 28036-2981; (704)
896-0250 with checks made payable to: The Barony of the Sacred Stone/SCA Inc.
If you need any further information, please contact Bran at the previous
listing or e-mail him at swmyers@aol.com. And, of course, all pipers get in
for free! Why? Because it's a Bflfire Dunn tradition! Though they do have
to play for their supper. Why? Because that's a Bflfire Dunn tradition too!

"They are saying they will get this booty cheap."

THE PRIZES: Naturally, the village of Mabinogi provides prizes to all of its
champions throughout the weekend in all of its events! But here's an extra
special competition, just for you, now! Each section of this announcement is
preceded by a quote from the "Gereint and Enid" section of The Mabinogion.
Read the story and bring a copy of this announcement with the names of the
person speaking written in under their respective quotes and enter the Who
Said That? Competition. What's the prize for this? Guess you'll just have
to come to the event and find out.

"The innkeeper guided him until he had all the directions he needed."

THE DIRECTIONS: Take your best route to I-85 just north of the SC-NC state
line. Take Exit 2, the KINGS MOUNTAIN NATIONAL MILITARY PARK exit, (this is
about five miles south of the King's Mountain exit which you should NOT
take). Go south on 216 following the signs which lead into the park and
continue through to King's Mountain State Park. Turn right at the sign
marked Group Camps. Mabinogi signs will also be posted from the I-85 exits.
