A Viking Thyng
September 27-29
The College of Yarnvid presents for your edification and amusement A Viking
Thyng, to be held in the county of Goochland, VA. This will be a pre 1000 Viking
fair during which all their neighbors (Briton, Pict, Scot, Norman, Frisian,
Finn, and others from even farther afield) are invited to trade, feast, and
settle disputes. We are once again holding period encampment competitions, both
for veterans and for those who have created their camps within the last year.
The members of Markland's Viking Camp and Longship Company will be displaying
their camp and the Gyrfalcon faering boat.
In addition, there will be a best period appearance with accoutrements
competition, male and female. There will also be archery, axe throwing, foot
races and chases, a holmgang tourney, and spear throwing. On the lighter side,
there will be Bardic and Tacky Viking contests during the feast. Brace
yourselves for the Magyar Memorial Bunny Hunt and Free for All.
Whether you choose to compete or not, please join us of a pleasant weekend of
camping beside the scenic River James and a taste of what life was like in the
Viking Age. Site opens at 12:01 pm Friday.
