Subject: [Mid] Neat display in Detroit
Greetings!
While perusing the latest Lapidary Journal (March 1997), I came across this
interesting announcement:
GOTHIC ROMANCE
Sometimes the past can be evoked more clearly by a single object than by all
the words in a history book. Gazing upon this ivory comb (picture to right,
of a stunning carved hair comb) a modern observer with a creative mind can
imagine the woman who once owned it running it thorugh her hair, pausing to
smile at the engraved images of lovers meeting in an orchard. Perhaps the
comb was a gift from a young man as a pledge of his devotion; perhaps it once
belonged to her mother.
Wherever it came from, there's no question about where it is now. The comb,
which comes from 14th century France, is one of approximately 100 ivory pieces
included in an exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts entitled "Images in
Ivory: Precious Objects of the Gothic Age." The pieces have been assembled from
museums all over the world, and include devotional and everyday objects from
the 13th through 15th centuries, a time before people even suspected that
species _could_ be endangered. The exhibition will be housed at the Detroit
Institute March 9-May 11, after which it will travel to the Walters Art Gallery
in Baltimore, Maryland, June 22-August 31.

For those of you planning to attend Pentamere RUM, this could be an interesting
side trip! Oakland College is at the very western outskirts of the Detroit
suburbs.
