Clarification on medieval terms.

Poster: Bob & Diana Cosby <cosby@erols.com>

On a research board I'm on the question posted is this:
I need the name of the position of someone in the 1300s in England who
would dispense justice or look into a murder in a small town.

I'm a bit confused at one of the replies received to answer this
question. The respondent used the terms "crowner" and "Shire-Reeve" in
their reply. I've reviewed my "Medieval Wordbook," "The Life in a
Medieval City," by Gies, and "A Dictionary of Chivalry," but I've can't
find confirmation of the definitions of these words. Any clarification
would be greatly appreciated.
Ha det sa bra,
Diana Cosby
