There's an easier way... everybody's seen those little stickers and whatnot
that change color when they're pressed or heated.  The material inside is
nothing more than cholesterol.  If stickers of this stuff are available, I
imagine that sheets of this stuff are available.  Buy a few sheets.  Put
them on top of a dummy suit of armor.  Note the color change when a specific
weight is placed/dropped on it.  Start keeping a database.  Record
temperatures just in case they matter to the color change.  Try a few with
"hit-and-slide" impacts just to see what they look like.  Get REALLY
detailed and have individual baronies do this, recording data all the while.

It wouldn't mean much in the long run, but at least there'd be a set of
criteria to measure by.
