Actually, Sir Corby de la Flamme's gambeson is made of (at least) two 
layers of material with narrow vertical 'pockets' sewn in them.  The 
'pockets' are then stuffed with cotton batting, using a narrow rod. 

Mistress Thjora won the Kingdom armorer's competition with one of the 
gambesons she made Sir Corby.

It's a fairly inexpensive form of armor, especially compared to plate.  
The textile part of me wonders if the gambesons were stuffed with wool 
during our time period.

I don't recommend the use of garden hose.  ;-)
