1) Depends on which "them." If you mean Scandinavians, first off,
most of them weren't called Vikings in the first place. My few
dabblings in the subject indicate that they were usually called
Northmen. Also, it appears that some of their favorite victims
(like England) were able to differentiate Danes from the others
(hence Danelaw); this implies that the major Scandinavian ethnic
groupings were already around, as does the text of Beowulf. If,
on the other hand, you mean people who travel around and trade
when they can and raid when they can, there are any number of
names.
2) Columbus certainly brought a few folks back with him. The other
explorers followed suit.
3) Modern or pre-modern?
