Greetings from Richard!

Live chess games are not interesting for the majority of the pieces (see 
Dafydd's post).  The obvious scenario would require a great deal of 
modification to become interesting.  

Some ideas:

Each piece must be moved once before any piece is moved a second time.  
No piece may be moved after it has sucessfully defended it's square.
Use some version of period chess rules (either Dafydd or I can give 
   anyone a lot more information on this).

The goal behind these ideas is to get away from having a few pieces 
dashing around the board making all the moves and monopolizing all the 
combat.
