Re: many messages
one reply to this whole thing, then I'm going home:
I don't know if anybody even remembers this, but Internet Relay Chat (read IRC)
started as a serious discussion line for official people at universities,
professors and the like, to be better able to discuss things of note and
interest to their particular scientific communities.
That quickly devolved to the totally un-serious chat lines we all know and love
today. I don't remember how it happened on IRC, but when I got on it in 1989 or
so, people were still joining some channels and discussing serious stuff,
particularly the Japanese. That might still endure; I don't know. What I do
know is that the rest of the bandwidth was nothing but people sitting around
having a good time.
I'll gladly endorse Melys' suggestion, i.e. "fluff" and "serious", or better
yet, just leave it at one thing for everybody who wants serious stuff to look
for: "Serious" in the subject line. That's easy, and the rest of us can read
what we want to.
One final note for the weekend, Greg Lindahl: I AM getting two posts for most
messages. I know what you're talking about where it shows two people in the re:
line, and I think that you might be right in that people are just replying both
the the person and the net, which turns around and posts the msg again. I
suggest that people reply to EITHER the person OR the net.
However, I AM getting double posts from the net, and I can show you that fact
upon request.
C U all Monday,
Jonathan Blackbow

unto the many denizens of the merry rose, from melys, greetings!
one of the things i've seen done - to great effect - on other lists to
address the issue of serious vs. "fun" listmail is to have two separate
lists running, one for the interactive fiction folk and one for more
weighty pursuits. perhaps we could do something along the lines of
merryrose@atlantia.sca.org for the interactive folks, and keep
atlantia@atlantia.sca.org for the announcements, discussions, etc. that
way we don't squelch the fun, but we don't inconvenience folks who have
small inboxes or only one account to route mail to.
i would strongly encourage such a thing, mostly because i fear some of the
frivolity on-list, in such vast quantities, will chase away people who'd
be likely to stay were the signal-to-noise ratio a little better. if we
can't actually spawn two lists, we might want to think about starting a
convention of labelling the subject headers (ie, using something like
FLUFF: to designate the ongoing Crockery Wars) so that those of us
with filter utilities can deal with it automagically and those without
will still have an easier time knowing what to delete.
of course, that means that everyone on the list has to pay attention to
keeping their subject headings current, and we all know how likely THAT
is... *wry grin*
those are just a couple of ideas i've been kicking around ever since i had
to move the list out to a spare account. i don't know how feasible the
idea of two separate lists is, and i don't know how enforceable the fluff
labels would be, but hopefully it'll give us a jumping off point that will
allow us to accomodate the more serious crowd without being wet blankets
about it...
in service,
lisa (melys isn't
this much of a
net.geek!)
