  In these days of instantaneous communication and imaginary money, would 
  it not be possible to arrange for agents of the major money lenders to 
  handle the mundane details of payment?  Surely I could provide you with 
  an identifier uniquely mine, and these agents could then arrange payment 
  from my accounts.

Last Sunday's New York Times Magazine had a good article by James Gliek on the
topic.  Let's not discuss it here, however.
