RE: Disc: Bran's, um, faux pas

Greetings to the patrons of the Merry Rose from Konrad.

Lord Leifr brings up the question of what armor a participant is assumed to
be wearing regardless of what he actually is wearing.

The 1994 edition of the Marshal's Hand Book defines fully armoured in
Appendix 1, Definitions, Other Definitions, #6 as follows:

"For purposes of acknowledging blows, a fully armored fighter is presumed to
be wearing a light-weight, short sleeved, knee length, riveted mail hauberk
over a padded gambeson, with boiled leather arm and leg defenses and open
faced iron helm with a nasal. (The helm may be presumed to include a very
light chain mail drape ---- permitting vision and resisting cuts by mere
touch of a bladed weapon.) (Note that the hand, knee, and lower leg armor
are considered to be proof against all attack. Also, the hands, wrists,
knees and lower legs, and feet, including the areas up to 1" (2.5 cm) above
the knee cap and 1' (2.5 cm) above the bend of the wrist, are not legal
targets.)"

In Appendix II, in the Conventions of Combat of the SCA, Inc., section IV.
Acknowledgment of Blows, part A:

"A. In judging the effect of blows, all fighters are assumed to be fully
armoured. Special tournaments or combats may be held which redefine what
ares of the body are armoured, and to what extent, so long as all
participants are made aware of the special conditions to start of combat.
1. All "fully armoured" fighters are presumed to be wearing hauberk over a
padded gambeson, with boiled leather arm and leg defenses and open faced
iron helm with a nasal. The helm may be presumed by Kingdom convention to
include a very light chain mail drape ---- permitting vision and resisting
cuts by mere touch of a bladed weapon."

Konrad

| Sometimes friends of mine wonder if we should not take the Kingdom of
| Atlantia out of the SCA, especially when they go around axing our kingdom
| Seneschal. Who needs to worry about that, we'll get thrown out soon
enough.
|
| Rules of the List clearly state that no matter what armour the fighter is
| wearing, EVERYBODY is supposed to recognize the same level of blows
| because EVERYBODY is supposed to imagine themselves wearing the same
| armour; open-faced helms, chainmail, and leather arms I think, but
| someone can certainly check that detail.
|
| Still, it wouldn't suprise me that Duke Michael is encouraging such a
| heresy, if in fact his Grace is.
|
| Plate is nice if you want to wear it, but it's not an excuse for
rhinohiding.
|
| Leifr Johansson, wearing
| 12 gauge spun dome, 14 gauge sides, open face grill,
| Kydex Wisby Plate, Gambeson,
| Waxed leather vambraces and rearbraces
| Covered Plastic legs with metal knee cops, soon to be replaced
| Cloth and leather gauntlets
| Cloth, leather and plastic gorget
