  recommend? Interested individuals may want to start looking up period
  roll of arms or heraldry used in battles.

I only know of one online.  http://people.delphi.com/ivanor/  But there may be
others.

I have purchased, but not yet received, color copies of many period rolls of
arms, and I have a book with several of them.  Some folks may have the Scots
Roll, for example.  (Which I don't yet, darn!)  I know that, if you can reach
her, Jaelle has more books on the topic than most people.

Check with a local library, or a local herald.  We heralds tend to collect
books on the topic.
