  I'm not sure about #1, since I can't find that Iberian tapestry website, 
but as for #2, I'm sure they would be willing to wear attire appropiate 
to THEIR culture.  We shouldn't expect them to conform to our European 
ideals.  I don't understand why you bring in the American discoverers.
The Portuguese sailed up and down the Atlantic, just never got far enough
west.  I'm sure we can find records of them encontouring hurricanes and, if
so, it's reasonable that they would capture some for slaves.  The hurricanes
didn't have gunpowder or even simple bows and arrows.  I was actually thinking
of having a hurricane persona that was adopted by a Portuguese merchant (so
that I could reasonably say that I traveled all over), but I was having 
trouble documenting the name Gustav in Portugaul.

P.S.  Was HRM Cnut an early king of the west?
