As I heard it, the Vikings landed on Iceland, found it pleasant enough, then
landed on Greenland (as yet unnamed) and went back to Iceland. When other
travelers came looking for a place to live, they were told the name of the
place they had landed was Iceland, "but there's this other place we call
Greenland just to the west. A really lovely place I hear." And so those
living in Iceland were left alone. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)
