The way I heard it, the founders of Myrkfaelinn drew up a
charter that stated that they would govern themselves by
a Thing (or Assembly) and would owe no allegiance to any
king; this charter was written in Old Icelandic, so the
King of the East may well have not known what he was agreed
to when he signed it. The law has since been changed; all
charters must be written in modern English -- but Myrkfaelinn's
charter still stands. Their fighters do not automatically
fight for the East at Pennsic, but must be hired to it;
the usually payment is a large amount of cookies baked by
the surrounding groups. Myrkfaelinn is now large enough to
be a Barony, but it never will be (since baronies are fiefs);
it is technically a shire. The most excellent fighters of
the Dominion (such as the near-legendary Master John the Pell)
tend to become Masters-at-Arms rather than Knights.
