This is what ensued after an email on this subject got posted on the
motorcycle list I am on.
For that matter, I heard a story about this very subject on NPR yesterday
(or maybe saturday?), saying, in essence, the long distance companies want
to use the monies they get from itnernet access to wire up the schools
(which is not the best of ideas, who will pay to maintain and administer the
schools' LANs? But that's another kettle of fish)- and that the industry is
wide open to suggestions, there is no set policy or even one set agenda to
push for.  So read and be informed.  But I haven't made up my mind yet which
side I want to be on.
