Elen Prydydd makes a good point -- when you think about travel time, take 
into account that the first 15 miles up here (DC) takes an hour, on Friday 
evening, and is a miserable experience to boot.

That said, I've noticed that the road to other parts of the kingdom gets 
shorter as I acquire more friends at the other end of it -- the road to a 
friend's house is never long.  So travel is self-reinforcing; the more you 
go, the more you're willing to go (ability is another question...)
