Re: Celtic wear

Good day m'lord Michael -

I've copied this to the Merry Rose in case there are others out there trying to
find the SCA in Roxbury Mill (Montgomery County, Maryland). This means that you
may well get a duplicate copy of this if you are on the Atlantia email list. If
so, I apologize.

My name is Aurora Astore and I'm the Chatellaine of the Shire of Roxbury Mill
in the fairest of our Kingdoms, Atlantia. As Chatellaine of our Shire, it's my
privilege to help new folks find their way in the SCA. Silver Spring is in
Roxbury Mill and we're thrilled to hear from you. We hold Shire Meetings at
Aspen Hill Library the second Tuesday of each month. We gather sometime between
7 and 7:30 in the downstairs meeting room. I'd like to invite you and your son
(and any others who are interested) to come and meet us. We hold regular dance
and fighter practices as well as arts and science gatherings. Information about
these will be available at the meeting (I don't have it all right here).

The SCA is divided into 13 Kingdoms which are in turn divided into Baronies,
Shires, Colleges, etc. The Kingdom of Atlantia includes Maryland, Virginia,
North Carolina, South Carolina plus a bit of Georgia and minus a bit of
Virginia. Please visit the SCA web site at www.sca.org. Here you can find
information about who we are and what we do as well as much other good stuff.
If you link to GEOGRAPHY then to ATLANTIA you'll find our kingdom web page. It
contains a calendar of upcoming events that are being held in our Kingdom.

Now, your questions regarding Celtic lore and garb. This is not my area of
expertise so I've renewed your request in the Merry Rose at Cheapside. I know
the SCA and believe that somebody will contact you with some pointers. You
mentioned Braveheart. Please be aware that there are some important errors in
the historic accuracy of the costuming. I'm certain that you will hear of them
from some of us who have researched Celtic history. In addition to the input of
those who have researched the period, there are references available on line
and in public libraries. If you access the SCA web page, our Arts and Sciences
section contains a link to information about medieval Scotland and a multitude
of other wonderful links. You'll be amazed at what's out there. It's a great
place to wander the web.

I hope to see you on April 8 at the Aspen Hill Library. Welcome to the SCA and
the world of medieval recreation.

In service to Atlantia
Aurora Astore
Chatellaine, Shire of Roxbury Mill
