Given the lively discussion on the list recently, I thought I'd toss in
a pithy maxim to season the pot...

The ability to comprehend ideas on both sides of an argument is the mark
of a great mind;
The ability to deal fairly with both parties in said argument is the
mark of a great heart;
The ability to do so with empathy and compassion is the mark of a great
soul.
