An earl of my acquaintance gave up fighting a few years back, in accordance
with his doctor's recommendation.  (I am pleased, though perhaps a little
concerned, to see that he has started up again.)  He told the novice fighter
to whom he had sold his armour and shield that it would be a *very good*
idea to repaint that shield before engaging in any melees....
