There are various tribal cultures that do this too... but as fascinating as
it is, it doesn't respond to my original issue ... what was that food? I
told her I thought I could find out; let's not have me lose my
miracle-working-mother points!

I think that this was also done in the Period.
Doesn't the surname Perlmutter (German or Yiddish for "Mother of
Pearl") date back that far?
How about the Greek surname Papadopolous?
