[TY] The Oath of Fealty

Poster: meridies@web.ce.utk.edu

We've had several discussions and references to the Meridien Oath Of Fealty
that reference it's source as Tolkien. Here are the details.

In the Return of the King (part 3 of The Lord of the Rings trilogy) Pippin
swears fealty to tDenethor after the death of Boromir and Merry. This
happens in the first chapter, Minas Tirith. The text is as follows:

" 'Take the hilts,' said Gandalf, ' and speak after the Lord, if you are
resolved on this.' 'I am,' said Pippin......"Here do I swear fealty and
service to Gondor, and to the Lord and Steward of the realm, to speak and to
be silent, to do and to let be, to come and to go, in need or in plenty, in
peace or in war, in living or dying, from this hour henceforth, until my lord
release me, or death take me, or the world end. So say I, Peregrin son of
Paladin of the Shire of the Halflings."
"And this do I hear, Denethor son of Ecthelion, Lord of Gondor, Steward of
the High King, and I will not forget it, nor fail to reward that which is
freely given: fealty with love, valour with honor, oath-breaking with
vengance."

Just for the record.
