[MR] Another reconstructed conversation

Poster: "Ed Hopkins" <Ed.Hopkins@MCI.Com>

A Spanish conquistador on a horse met an Inca Indian
leading kind of pack animal that the Spaniard had never
seen before. He rode up to the man to ask him what
the creature was called.

-- ¿Cómo se llama eso?

(He pronounced the "ll" like a combination of 'l' and 'y')

The indio just stared at him as if he didn't understand
Spanish (and as if he'd never seen a horse before).
The Spaniard was frustrated. "Look," he said, pointing
to his horse. "This is called a horse."

-- Mira. Este se llama un caballo.

(Again pronouncing the "ll" like a combination of 'l' and 'y')

The native's eyes lit up with comprehension. He pointed
to the horse and said, "ka-BAL-yo".

The Spaniard smiled and nodded, then pointed to the
strange beast. "Now then, that one; what's it called?"

-- Pues, eso; ¿cómo se llama?

Again the Indian pointed where the stranger pointed and
repeated the last word the stranger said. Then each man
went on his way.
