Greetings, just to throw something into the debate without having read all
the posts:

Have you looked at this URL?  It was written by Duke Cariadoc and may lay
some of your arguments to rest.

Also, I have heard that boiling leather in water for 10 min and then
forming it makes great Cuir-bouilli.  Just think of very old bicycle seats
- bone hard.  To protect the leather you can brush some wax on.

Anyway, I haven't made any, but I've been witness to at least two
fulfledged discussions like you are having.
