Actually, the Anglo-Saxon wergeld could be paid not just as a whole-man
price, but as a portion price--there was a repayment fee if, say, you cut
off a man's hand, arm, ear, leg, etc. These prices varied according to
social rank.  There were also fines for rape (yes, based on social
status...).

Alianora, maybe you and I should team-teach a virtual history course
someday! ;-)
