There are as many household customs as there are households! It's
like asking if there's an optimal form of snowflake.

One thing does seem constant, at least to me. Joining a household
brings with it obligations, which one must consider before taking
upon oneself. It's not like merely living in a barony or shire,
where you may or may not play with anyone there.
