T1000 shields?

Greetings, all!

A question, since the topic last week wandered onto shields: does
anyone here have any experience with T1000 aluminum shields (I think
they're called that -- they're the really light, really strong aluminum
shields)?  I was wondering how well they stand up and what would be a
reasonable cost for a shield blank made out of that material?  Oh yeah,
and would I need to know anything in particular about finishing it off
(straps, painting it, etc.?)
