The correct title

Poster: Bob & Diana Cosby <cosby@erols.com>

I am passing on a question from another writer. Any replies would be
greatly appreciated:
I've a question concerning the use of titles in 13th Century England: If
a man was an Earl in France, but only a Baron in England, what would
they call him in England? Earl, or Baron? I'm basing a character upon
an actual person I found in the medieval records ["Count of Aumale and
Lord of Burstwick"] who had just such land ownership, but I don't know
which title he'd maintain whilst in England.

Thank you very much in advance!
Ha det sa bra,
