Event Announcement
April 9-11-The Feast of St. George
Canton of Kappellenberg, Chapel Hill, NC
Join the people of Kappellenberg in celebrating the return of
spring! Chivalry and mayhem will reign side-by-side as our heavy
armored combatants participate in period style tournament fighting,
while all will be dazzled by the wit and skill of the rapier fighters.
Music, dancing (a Carouso ball in the afternoon and masked ball
following feast), period games, classes, CAMBOK, and children's
activities will all run during the day on Saturday...and make sure not
to miss the Dragon Parade! Activities are still being scheduled, and a
fuller list will be included in the April Acorn.
If you are interested in teaching a class or scheduling a
performance, please contact the autocrat as soon as possible. We are
particularly interested in scheduling brief musical or dramatic
performances to occur during the day.
Lady Sveva la Lucciola will be coordinating the A&S competitions.
As spring will be upon us and flowers bursting out all over, a static
A&S contest will be based on this theme. Entries must either depict
flower motifs (such as embroidered flowers, painted heraldic flower) or
utilize flowers as a construction element (dyes from flowers, or cooking
with flowers). Let your imagination bloom! The second A&S competition
focuses on representations of dragons (not surprisingly!), any medium,
and might include banners, masks, 3-D dragons, dragons on scrolls,
dragon shaped food, etc. Lastly, as this is a 16th C themed event, we
will have a late period garb expo (requiring verbal documentation only)
late in the afternoon. Lady Sveva's contact info is sveva@juno.com, or
Leila Mohajerin (919-309-0236).
Costs are $6 site fee, $6 for feast; children age 6-12, ½ price.
There is no tenting available, but there are plenty of cabins. Please
note on your reservation the number of spaces required, and the names of
those joining you. Most cabins have 4 beds each. Send reservations to
Lord Nikulai Ivanovitch (Neal Atlow) 1720 Euclid Rd. Durham, NC 27713
(919-572-1730)
The autocrat is Lady Kathryn Rous, who may be reached at
919-408-3008 or (Marybeth.Lavrakas@alumnae.brynmawr.edu). Feast will
be prepared by Lady Bonne of Tarquair; please contact the autocrat with
any questions or concerns.
The event will be held at Umstead State Park in Raleigh, NC. The
gates to the park are locked between 8pm and 6 am, so we will be running
a shuttle service to/from the campsite and cars parked outside. If you
will be arriving Friday, the shuttle will be running until midnight; if
you think you will be arriving after midnight, please contact us to
arrange local crash space. DIRECTIONS: From north or south: I-85 to
Durham, NC; take 70 [E] to Umstead State Park, and follow the signs to
Camp Lapihio. Site restrictions are no alcohol, no merchanting, and
(alas) no archery. (Note that although there is an entrance to the park
off of I-40, there is no access to Camp Lapihio from that gate.)
