According to the OED:
Laird: A middle english (northern dialect) word derived from lord
Lord: An old english word made up of two root words hlaf (loaf,bread)
+ weard (keeper,guardian).
So a lord is literally someone who keeps the bread. Less an
expression of land ownership than an expression of ownership of the
products of the land.
