Re: Acknowledgement

Title: Re: Acknowledgement
The internet is too slow a medium for my fury, for such it has become, and I find myself compelled to write before my last letter can be responded to.  The views espoused by Duke Logan in this letter are precisely the cause of the problems with fighting in Atlantia today.  They are the exact antithesis of chivalry, and it chagrins me that anyone who holds them is in any position of influence.  Of course, these attitudes have been around for a long time, they just haven't had a spokesman.  It doesn't take any more skill for a fighter to say "you can't hit me hard enough to make me accept your blows," just a willingness and ability to set aside the possibly injurious consequences of such a posture.  This kind of elitist, "might makes right" attitude is both ethically wrong and practically futile.  It discourages new fighters and injures old ones.

Sincerely,

Takenoshita Naro

This is a copy of a private response I sent to an individual earlier today. I just thought I would share it as an idea to think about.  The same comparisons can also be made about the Laurel, Pelican, Chivalry, Pearl, Dolphin, AoA, etc., et al.  Once you begin to lower the bar standard, you will never stop.

The answer usually is that those that can not compete, complain. I can compete in the SCA.  I cannot compete on the basketball court. Thus, I don't play.  If I wanted to, I would practice. I certainly wouldn't say "hey, you guys need to stop jumping so high and growing so tall so that I can play too!!"

Nobody in the SCA has a right to fight.  I refuse to lower the bar to the point that everyone can participate if that means that the nature of the sport is gone.  There are these things called boffer weapons.  They don't hurt, they are cheaper to produce, and don't require the purchase of armor.  Let those that "don't want to get hurt" or "have a low threshold for pain" pick up some insulation from Home Depot and tape up their own 'pain free' weapon.

Regards,

Duke Logan
