Sir Pieter uses two different techniques, depending on whether the apparatus
is being used for data gathering (what you describe above) or calibration.
There, he was gathering data for a statistical consensus on what "good",
"marginal", and "excessive" are.

The training system has the same ball on a post, but calibration circles are
chalked on the ground at the distances he's determined are averages for the
three blow levels. The TI article also had some variance in circle depending
on ball weight available.
