Actually, from my research, the kilt, as modernly known, isn't period anyway.
The breacan feale, or "Great Plaid" was worn in late period, but its use
continued into the 18th century until someone got the idea to divide it in two
and sew the pleats in the lower part, forming the feale beg, or "little kilt".
