The library of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a very large
collection of medicinal history in addition to all of the current medical
research. My aunt is a reference librarian there, and researchers of all
types are always welcomed. If you are not close to Bethesda, then a phone
call to the reference desk might get you started with a good bibliography of
sources. I do not have the number off hand, but it should be available from
the main operators at NIH. Also, I do believe that there catalog is
available online. I know there was a telnet version several years ago, but I
think there is a web version by now too.

Good luck,
