Pretty much anything that might melt, spoil, go bad or stale is a bad idea.  
Things like crackers, peanut butter, hard candy, gum, that sort of thing are 
good.  Baked goods that arent real high in fat are good, since fats tend to 
go rancid in the heat.  

A good person/group of folks to ask would be your local Red Cross Military 
Liason ....  they can give you all the particulars on what can and can't be 
sent to where.   For Wake County, contact the branch office on Peartree Lane. 
 Another resource would be folks who did a tour in the Gulf.
