Actually, ibn Fadlan did exist - he was a diplomat, and visited the
so-called "Rus" - the Vikings. Crichton's book is a fairly loose adaptation
of a period text, and I expect the movie will be a fairly loose adaptation
of *that*... but there is actual history somewhere behind all of it.
