Now that you've had all this wonderful advice about how to *choose* a
device, here's the important part:

*** MAKE SURE IT'S SOMETHING YOU CAN STAND FOR THE REST OF YOUR SCA LIFE.

Draw it out (to make sure you can!). Hang it in your room where you will
see it every day. Design an embroidery pattern with it. Paint it
on a tabard, your feastgear, your pouch. **Don't** spend your $8 to
register it until you've looked at it frequently for a while (that means
distinctly more than a week!), and you're absolutely certain you won't be
sick of it by Twelfth Night. It's easier (and cheaper) to change your
device before it's registered.

One thing nobody has mentioned -- is your name registered? If it's not,
you'll need to do that too in order to register the device. You can
register a name without a device, but you can't register a device without
at least a holding name.

Another fine example of canting arms -- Lord Laurel said so! :-)
