Re: Am I in the right place?
My Dear Lady Mordeyrn:
On behalf of myself and my countrymen, I thank you for your warm welcome.
Alairia is the name of the Kingdom in which members of ther Tidewater
Medievalists play. We are a small local group in Southeastern Virginia,
founded about five years ago as an offshoot of a group which, a dozen or
so years before that, was an offshoot of the SCA. (So I'm told--'twas
before my time.)
Our main premise is that the rank one earns, and therefore the role one
is permitted to play, should be based solely upon a) one's skill as a
medievalist; and b) one's use of those skills for the group. We have
six areas of achievement (we call them disciplines) with four levels in
each. They are: Manorial (the study of Feudal/country life); City
(crafts, guilds and urban life); Government (both the running of a
group such as ours and medieval law and government); University (the
scholastic life, and the philosophy of the times); Religions (heavy on
Catholicism, as we are European-based, but also Islam and Judaism and
Heathenry); and Martial, (steel, blunted, light contact,
non-choreographed, quarterstaff, the same, and archery.)
Any member achieving level 2 in any discipline is eligible to vote; one
level 3 means one becomes "gentle" rather than "common" and can display
a coat of arms; two level 3 in two different disciplines makes one a
noble and confers 1000 hides of land. Each additional level 3 or 4 adds
1000 hides. A Great Noble is a noble with 5000 or more hides. Great
nobles may have households. All of these awards are automatic, and
cannot be denied to a member in good standing who has completed the
requirements.
Peerages are by vote of the whole group, with eligibility for peerage
determined by additional requirements. E.g., a Baron must have 7500
hides of land (service in an office also confers land...) and a level
four in either Manorial or Government; and Earl must have 10,000 hides
and a level 4 in *both* manorial and government to be eligible. Then the
whole group votes on who actually gets the rank.
Our Monarch is elected, and both monarch and consort must be Nobles.
The whole idea is two-fold: No one is granted or denied favor because of
who they know, only what they know, and no one should find themselves
playing a part they are ill-equipped to play. (We're very big on
role-playing our personae.)
Our time period is 966 to 1376 (100 years before Hastings to the death of
the Black Prince, in case you're wondering.)
Our Web page (under construction, please be patient) is at

Whew! Quite a lot for an introduction, but as you may suppose, we are
proud of our little club. Anyone who wishes to come for a visit, please
let me know, and I'll contact you about upcoming events. Phoenix Tourney
and Coronation, in July and August, respectively, look to be shaping up
well.
Once again, thank you for the kind welcome. Now, if Alairian pence are
good here, I'll have a pint of stout, Innkeeper, if you please!
With warmest regards,
Will O'Bryan
