unto the many denizens of the merry rose, from melys, greetings!

one of the things i've seen done - to great effect - on other lists to
address the issue of serious vs. "fun" listmail is to have two separate
lists running, one for the interactive fiction folk and one for more
weighty pursuits. perhaps we could do something along the lines of
merryrose@atlantia.sca.org for the interactive folks, and keep
atlantia@atlantia.sca.org for the announcements, discussions, etc. that
way we don't squelch the fun, but we don't inconvenience folks who have
small inboxes or only one account to route mail to.

i would strongly encourage such a thing, mostly because i fear some of the
frivolity on-list, in such vast quantities, will chase away people who'd
be likely to stay were the signal-to-noise ratio a little better. if we
can't actually spawn two lists, we might want to think about starting a
convention of labelling the subject headers (ie, using something like
FLUFF: to designate the ongoing Crockery Wars) so that those of us
with filter utilities can deal with it automagically and those without
will still have an easier time knowing what to delete.

of course, that means that everyone on the list has to pay attention to
keeping their subject headings current, and we all know how likely THAT
is... *wry grin*

those are just a couple of ideas i've been kicking around ever since i had
to move the list out to a spare account. i don't know how feasible the
idea of two separate lists is, and i don't know how enforceable the fluff
labels would be, but hopefully it'll give us a jumping off point that will
allow us to accomodate the more serious crowd without being wet blankets
about it...
