The foregoing is an urban legend which has been making the rounds for some
time now.  I believe it may be even included in the recent book "The Big
Book of Urban Legends", which can be found in the humor section of any
well-stocked bookstore.  I believe the name "Craig Shirgold" or a variant is
used as well.

In any case, colleagues of mine in Federal law enforcement have checked this
out with the major "Make a Wish" foundations in this country and have found
no truth to it.
