I remember Agnes! We lost an ancient walnut tree, a good 3-1/2 feet
in diameter, that smashed an outbuilding flat! The funny thing was, I
slept through the whole thing -- high winds, torrential downpour, the
tree crashing down, the works! I just woke up and it was a lot wetter
out than it had been the night before, and the tree was down. There
was an enormous hole where the roots had been! Real old-timers may
also remember Hazel from back in the fifties -- that one did some
serious damage up here too; folks compared and contrasted Agnes to
Hazel.
Fortunately, here in northeastern Stierbach today, Evan and Alys have
lost only one half of one small tree beside the back fence, instead of
either of the 30-foot shallow-rooted silver maples that would have
smashed the house! (Yes, it did fall in that direction -- whew!)
No, we didn't have to have Fran go right over top of us to make us
thankful for what we have left! (Hey, maybe next year we'll have sun
enough in the backyard to garden there instead of only in the front!)
