Re: Staines Morris (English country dance)

I think I can help with the choreography to Staines Morris. Do you know
basic English Country Dancing steps? If you don't, then my merely telling
you the steps won't help any. And I don't think my descriptive powers are
good enough to adequately describe them. One problem with this dance is
that it is written "Longwayes for as many as will". Since you will ptobably
be dancing to recorded music, you will need to figure out how many couples
it was played for. To do this, count the number of times key musical
phrases are repeated. A good bet is 6. Here are the steps
Start with men on the left, ladies on the right
Double up, double back
Double up, double back, end this double by turning to face left wall with
couples side by side
Double to the left wall no hands, double back, falling back into original places
Set and turn single, set and turn single
First man goes to the last women, sides once (now called active couple)
Active couple 1/2 turn by the right hand
Active couple 1/2 turn by the left hand
Active couple 1/2 turn clockwise both hands, 1/2 turn counterclockwise both
hands
Active couple take both hands and slip to top of set while other women move down
First man casts of very quickly to end of set

This continues until original first man is back in his spot.

I hope this is of some help.
