    I have a translation of a manual on mounted combat from Archeologia that says 
  that a warhorse is directly mostly with the legs and body shifts. One hand is 
  holding the lance, spear, or sword. The other one has the shield. No hands left 
  for the reigns.

Nice pun, if we were discussing Richard the III.  Did you mean "reins"?
