For what it's worth, I think the custom of escorting ladies into court is
a fairly new one.  At least, I have only seen it in the last year or so. 
Now of course, it could be a custom of long standing in some places that I
simply never saw in my first six years in the SCA, because I rarely got
out of Bright Hills during that time, and Bright Hills had very close ties
to the East in those days. In fact, a few times when I did get out of
Bright Hills, people would ask where I was from, and then would express
surprise that I had come all the way from Eastrealm for their event. (This
was before BH was elevated to Barony, however).  At any rate, I sort of
like the custom of escorting ladies into court, on the completely
undocumented feeling that it adds a nicely chivalrous flavour to the
proceedings (and also doesn't add extra time to the court).
