I have a very limited knowledge of spinning; however, a distaff looks
somewhat like a cone shaped-ridged cage on the end of a long stick. It
almost looks like a bundled broom with a pointed end above the bundled
portion (see very rough sketch below).  The picture that comes to mind
is of a woman with the end tucked in her belt as she used her fingers to
manipulate the thread.  I'm afraid that is as helpful as I can be on the subject, but I'm sure there are others out there with more knowledge and
a more thorough description.
