And just to show how these things shift... these days if you threw something
toward a woman she might reach with her hand, or bring her knees together to
catch it on her lap, but not one in a hundred would have the reaction
identified as "female" in Huck Finn! That's the effect of a generation of
"cross-dressing" by women.

Actually, the needle was just an indicator. The clencher was when the
woman threw Huck something and he caught in in his hands rather than in
his skirts by spreading his legs to make a hammock for it.
But that's kinda off topic.
