Actually, there is some debate over weather or not golf originated among
the Scots or the Danes.  It seems that before golf was being played in
Scotland, there was a game played among teh Danes called "colf" which
(from what we can tell) was similar to golf, but really resembled only the
putting part of the game.  It is pretty much established that the Scots
invented golf as we know it, although what influence the Danish colf had
on the game is unknown.  It was played on ice as well as land, though,
using raised markers instead of holes (wouldn't want to hit your ball down
a hole in the ice).  That would make for a rather interesting game!
