I think it all depends on the event and the persons involved... I seem to
remember a reasonable number (although not the majority, by any case) of
the fighters at Crown Tourney actually did fall down when they were killed
(one person, who's name eludes me, was particularly dramatic.

I do agree, however, that it adds a little bit more visual excitement
to pageants and tourneys.
