Born Too Late

Poster: "Ed Hopkins" <Ed.Hopkins@MCI.Com>

I have a strange urge to post a song that I
wrote a while ago.  I'm sorry that I can't
convey what the tune is, other than to say
it's a late-period-style ballad.

BORN TOO LATE

In the day we sweat it out on the streets
Of a twentieth-century dream,
As knights we fight in fields of glory
For Country, King, and Queen,
Sprung from ages that are still alive,
Where fealty and honor and chivalry still thrive.

You know mundanes always wear strange clothes:
Shoes with _round_ toes,
And the _women_ wear hose;
They do all the things we hate,
Because folk like us,
Lady, we were born too late.

Lady, take my sword;
I want to be your lord.
I want to guard your life and honor.
Not just because your corpora's great,
I also like your persona!

Together, lady, we'll get there at last,
Not back to the future
But forward into the past.

Will you walk with me out on the line?
'Cause, maid, I'm just a scared and lonely fighter,
But I've got to know how it feels.
I've got to have a war to fight.
Maid, I've got to have a sword of steel.

  [bagpipe solo]

The calligrapher draws scroll designs
And the fencer draws his foil.
Girls tie their hair in Celtic knots
And peers try to look so royal.

My retainer straps my helmet on;
I repair to the field with my pike.
I know I'll die without hesitation
If I feel a killing strike.
Huhn!

  [horn solo]

One, two, three, four!
The field is filled with broken heroes
On a last-chance power drive;
Ev'rybody had double kills
And know there's no-one left alive.

Together, lady, we can live with the mundanes.
I'll love you with all the fun danes
In my horde.

Someday soon, I don't know how,
We'll get to that time where we really want to live,
And rejoice in our fate,
But till then
Folk like us,
Lady, we were born too late.
